OUR FAMILY FAVORITE SHOOFLY PIE
You should have seen the look on Mr. Toms’ face when he walked in last night and saw this pie sitting on the counter. This is seriously his favorite dessert. He wants me to make this on his birthday, every holiday and at least once a month. The smell of molasses is enough to make you start drooling and your house will smell so good! It is good straight out of the oven, after its been sitting at room temperature or cold in the refrigerator.
If you like molasses cookies or even gingerbread cookies or cake you will like Our Family Favorite Shoofly Pie.
This is a special recipe perfected by Mr. Tom’s Grandmom years ago before she passed. I remember her and my father-in-law working in the kitchen for hours making pie after pie until she got it right. She was one of those cooks that just made something without following a recipe. I’m so glad they worked together to get it perfected and then writing it down.
First off start with your favorite crust. You can use a homemade or a refrigerated pie crust. I made mine with some bread flour (it was all I had) and I have to say it came out so light and flaky. We like the Crisco pie crust and the only one that I use. It always comes out great so why mess with perfection! Just look at that golden crust filled with a molasses goodness!
This is a little different from your traditional Shoofly as it doesn’t have that gooey bottom. It is more like cake in a pie crust. If you would like it to be a bit more gooey, put less of your flour mixture in the liquid base. We like it more cakey so that is why I make it this way. This will all make sense when you read the recipe.
Eat it with a fork or just slice a piece and eat it with your fingers. That is my favorite way to eat it…with a cup of coffee, of course. A good back strap molasses is the best for flavor town here. This is my favorite brand of molasses and you can usually find it in your local grocery store or order it on Amazon…it will be here by the time you finish reading this post. Ha!
This is a picture of the original recipe that Grandmom wrote out for me 23 years ago. It is priceless to me and I keep it framed hanging in my kitchen.
Do you have a special recipe that was passed on down to you? I would love to hear about it! I thought this song was so fun and now I need to try making an Apple Pan Dowdy! ♥

LOVE that you have the original recipe framed in your kitchen!! I’ve often wondered about Shoo-fly pie, but never tried it. I’m not really fond of molasses. … but I bet my Daddy would love it. 🙂
If you ever try it let me know. 🙂
