DIY EASY WOOD WALL TREATMENT

*This post was originally posted four years ago and we love our DIY Easy Wood Wall Treatment so much I wanted to share it with you again.

There are times when I know I drive my family crazy with moving furniture around the house. Sometimes just a little tweak makes me feel like I’ve done something fresh and new. Change places with a picture, a lamp, some fresh flowers or some new pillows. I love to paint walls or rather watch Mr. Tom paint and offer moral support. I’m a great cheerleader!

We bought a new house about two years ago and wanted to add some personal touches to it. One of the first things we did was change lights over the kitchen island and painted a few walls a complimentary color.

I love the warm wood tones and wanted to start incorporating some throughout our home. After researching wood walls online I discovered Stikwood and fell in love with the look and how easy it looked to install.

The hardest part of this project was deciding which color wood to go with and after ordering some samples ended up choosing Sierra Silver. When it came I was so excited and wanted it up right away. After waiting patiently over two weekends, Mr. Tom finally decided he was ready to conquer this project because he was convinced it wasn’t going to be that easy, but it was!

We started out by laying out a pattern on the floor…after doing one wall decided it really wasn’t necessary and just went for it. So fun watching it come to life and I fell in love more and more with it as each board went up.

We did have a few tricky areas because the tapered wall above the fireplace is at an angle. On the website it shows that you can just cut it with a simple saw, but Mr. Tom “needed” a reason to use his miter saw. The saw worked great, but you don’t need one. There were some pieces he just scored with a knife and snapped.

This wood is amazing! I have no idea how they do it, but hubs wants to go tour their plant.

The surface you show is incredibly like original rough barn wood, every piece is unique. We had one piece literally come with the head of a nail still on it and another with a knot that was slightly loose, which just added to the very realistic feel.

On the back side, the wood is smooth and clean with double stick tape in three rows all along the length. Each piece is a consistent thickness, it is 5″ wide and comes in random lengths. The smallest piece was about 8 inches long and the longest was 4 foot long.

What does all this mean??? It means that it is incredible easy to put up, look fabulous and impossible to get wrong.

Once you lay it out (really just think a few pieces ahead) you only have to make sure the length is right, peel and stick. Only caution, remember those three rows of tape I told you about? Those suckers are REALLY sticky! Make sure that you have the piece where you want it before pressing it on. Press it down and go over it with a rubber roller and viola you are done.

The whole project took about 6 hours, but that was because we had so many angles to cut and that includes taking a few coffee breaks.

This project cost about $700 which may seem a bit pricey, but considering what you would have to go through with putting up a wall with reclaimed wood it is worth every dollar!  (Our builder was going to charge between $2k to $5k depending on the material used to do this for us.)  Given the great focal point provided, I would do it again in a heartbeat and am secretly planning to do the ceiling in our entryway. (since this post we did the wall in powder room in Reclaimed Wood Weathered White)
